Manchester City have reportedly moved ahead of Arsenal in pursuit of Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy.

The 27-year-old made the move to Bernabeu from Lyon in 2019, and he has represented Los Blancos on 130 occasions in all competitions, contributing five goals and 10 assists in the process.

Mendy has won two La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups, the Champions League and the UEFA Super Cup during a successful period in the Spanish capital.

However, the France international has been restricted to just 25 appearances in all competitions this season due to injury problems. The left-back is currently facing a month or more on the sidelines with a calf issue that he picked up during a training session with his Spanish club.

Mendy has another two years left to run on his contract, but there has been speculation surrounding his future over the last few months. Spanish outlet Fichajes reported recently that Man City, Arsenal and Newcastle are all interested in signing the defender this summer.

According to the latest from the Spanish outlet, City have moved ahead of Arsenal in the race for the Frenchman’s signature as they look to address a problem position of theirs.

Fichajes suggests that Real will only listen to offers greater than £50 million, despite Mendy having just two years remaining on his contract in the summer.

Many consider Mendy as one of the best defensive left-backs in the game. But when it comes to the attacking side of his game, there have always been big question marks.

It remains to be seen if both clubs end up making a move for Mendy in the future or not. At 27 years of age, he is in his prime. But his series of injuries would raise the eyebrows of any potential suitor.
