Manchester City are OUT of the Carabao Cup after suffering a shock 2-0 defeat to struggling Southampton on Wednesday night.
Saints played with a verve and energy that belied their status as the Premier League’s bottom side and were sent on their way by Sekou Mara’s fine finish after City sloppily squandered possession.
Jones’ men didn’t stop there and continued to press Pep Guardiola’s lacklustre side all over the pitch and Moussa Djenepo scored a sublime second with a 30-yard lob that caught goalkeeper Stefan Ortega out.
Guardiola would’ve been furious with his team’s first-half display – evident by his three substitutions at the break. Walker, Palmer and Sergio Gomez were all hooked to make way for Nathan Ake, Manuel Akanji and Kevin De Bruyne.
City started the second half on the front foot, but they struggled to reduce the deficit. Alvarez missed a good opportunity shortly after the interval, while Grealish struggled to get on the end of some good crosses. It was obvious they needed Haaland.
Pep Guardiola brought on the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland after the interval, but the changes failed to have the desired impact.
In the end, Southampton held on to complete a memorable victory. City will not win a quadruple this season
This was the first time a Guardiola side has failed to progress from a domestic quarter-final tie having previously won the last 15, including the last nine since taking the City job.
Here’s what Man City fans have been saying on Twitter about the disappointing result and performance:
