Riyad Mahrez has promised to up his game in the second half of the season after enduring an inconsistent few months for Manchester City.
Mahrez has been a key player for City in recent seasons, and was the Blues’ top scorer in all competitions last term with 24 goals in all competitions. However, this season the 31-year-old winger has struggled for regular minutes and consistent performances, with Pep Guardiola often favouring Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva in wide roles.
Mahrez is confident that he can rediscover his best form in the second half of the season, even if he has contributed more this campaign than some have given him credit for.
“I’ve already scored five goals [and] I didn’t play a lot, to be fair,” Mahrez told The National during City’s week-long training trip to Abu Dhabi.
“I think the second half of the season is going to be way better for me and [bring] more goals to help the team.”
These Mahrez’s comments were shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Any player can score. The problem is the performance. He has to perform significantly better. He was really poor in the first half of the season. He got more game time than he deserved.”

“Mahrez always has a slow start to the season (granted this year it’s some of the worst performances i’ve seen from him) but he normally comes alive after christmas, not to forget he has to change his play style and completely adapt to a new system now Haaland is here.”

“Just needs a bit of confidence back, but never let him take a pen again.”
