Manchester City would be the “most obvious landing spot” in the Premier League for Lionel Messi, if he was to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of his contract in the summer, according to journalist Dean Jones.
Messi is in his second season in France after saying a heart-breaking goodbye to his career-long Spanish side in 2021 as financial issues made it impossible for him to re-sign.
PSG have yet to agree to an extension, as a result, he might have the opportunity to once again pick his next destination as early as this January, when he can line up a pre-contract agreement.
Jones believes that if Messi does leave the Ligue 1 giants at the end of his contract this summer, then a move to the Etihad Stadium is the obvious choice if the superstar decides on a Premier League move.
Jones told GIVEMESPORT: “We’d all love to see Messi in the Premier League, and it’s been mooted for years that it could happen.
“If it was to happen then Man City and Pep is the most obvious landing spot.”
Messi’s first season with PSG left many underwhelmed with 11 goals and 14 assists in all competitions, his lowest total since 2006/07.
He looks rejuvenated, having already scored four goals and assisted on seven more for Paris Saint-Germain. An extended stay in the French capital looks likelier now than it did this past summer.
Perhaps the Argentine forward will use his impending free agency to make his move to Major League Soccer and lay the groundwork for life after football.
More than anything, a move move to the Etihad might sound better in theory than it would be in practice.
Slotting Messi into Man City could be much easier said than done, and even at his age, he could once again become far too heliocentric a figure on the pitch.
