Manchester City beat their city rivals Manchester United to the signing of Manuel Akanji, it has now been revealed.
The Red Devils were linked with a move for the then-Borussia Dortmund centre-half early in the summer window. Akanji’s time in Germany appeared up and the Swiss international’s outstanding passing abilities made him a good for for new boss Erik ten Hag.
However, a move failed to get off the ground and for the longest time, Akanji seemed destined to remain where he was.
The Switzerland international has looked a smart signing by City, and could now be a key player for them in this weekend’s Manchester Derby.
Looking ahead to that game in his exclusive CaughtOffside column, Fabrizio Romano revealed how Manuel Akanji was also an option for Manchester United in defence this summer.
“This summer, Manuel Akanji was also an option for Man United’s defence,” he said.
“However, it didn’t happen because he was mainly admired by Ralf Rangnick, who then left his position at Old Trafford. City then moved for him late on in the window.”
The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.

“Rangnick had it right, linked with good players that would have helped Rags, said the players all need replacing which is right, then Glazers got rid 😂.”
