Manchester City got their Champions League campaign off to a perfect start with a 4-0 win over Sevilla on Tuesday night and Sergio Gomez was one of many players who impressed at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.
The 22-year-old was handed his first start since joining City from RSC Anderlecht over the summer and sent a message to Pep Guardiola that he can be relied upon at left-back.
Kyle Walker was ruled out of Tuesday’s game due to injury, so Joao Cancelo was forced to switch flanks, leaving a void at left-back to fill. Gomez was chosen ahead of Nathan Ake and Josh Wilson-Esbrand and didn’t let his manager down.
He didn’t look out of place as he started at left-back and the early signs are that the former Anderlecht man is a technically proficient player.
Gomez help shut down Sevilla to an extent that Ex-City man Jesus Navas didn’t make an impact on the right-hand side, failing to create a chance, make a successful dribble or whip in one accurate cross.
Against Sevilla, he played for 90 minutes, had 95 touches, won three aerial duels, completed 89.9% of his 69 passes, created two chances, whipped in six crosses, won two tackles, made two clearances, had one interception and had two dribbles.
Joe Bray of Manchester Evening News gave the Spaniard a player rating of 6/10 and said he ‘worked hard’ while keeping possession well, while Jamie Spencer of 90min gave Gomez a player rating of 7/10 and said he greatly ‘impressed’ in his first start.
As you’d expect, Man City fans were in high spirits all over Twitter, and were full of praise for their new left-back signing.
