Pep Guardiola has revealed that Manchester City duo Cole Palmer and Kalvin Phillips have both made a return to fitness ahead of his side’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Sunday.
City will be looking to continue their perfect start to the Premier League season against a Newcastle side who have picked up four points from their opening two matches without conceding a goal.
While Newcastle are sweating on the fitness of Matt Targett (hamstring) and Ryan Fraser (back), Man City are expected to welcome English midfield duo Cole Palmer and Kalvin Phillips back into the fold after they missed last weekend’s 4-0 win over AFC Bournemouth.
Speaking in a press conference on Friday, he said: “Cole is back, Kalvin is back, yeah. There are some niggles with some [other] players, but the rest are okay.”
The manager also said Sergio Gomez will be part of City’s travelling party to Newcastle on Sunday.
Gomez started training with the first team squad this week after completing his move from Anderlecht on Tuesday and Guardiola is happy with what he has seen from the Spanish left-back.
“So far, so good. No complaints,” he said.
“He is settling in, his mood is exceptional and he is starting to know us. He will travel with us.”
The City boss also emphasised his belief that the club have finished with their transfer business this summer, but also suggested that unforeseen circumstances could force his side into making more signings in the coming days.
Alongside Phillips, the Blues have brought in Erling Haaland, Sergio Gomez, and Stefan Ortega, while Julian Alvarez has arrived from River Plate after originally completing a deal in the winter window.
When asked if those additions would represent the sum total of City’s expenditure this summer, Guardiola replied: “Apparently, yes.
“But if someone moves, or if there is a problem then we have to expect maybe it happens, but apparently it is done.“
