‘Oh yessssss’, ‘best two strikers in the world joining’ – Some Man City fans react as River Plate president confirmed Julian Alvarez arrival date

Manchster City fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter which relays a report that claims River Plate president, Jorge Brito has confirmed it is ‘very likely’ Julian Alvarez will join the club from June.

The 22-year-old forward signed for the Citizens in January before returning to River Plate on loan, where he is currently set to stay until December 31.

Pep Guardiola’s side are believed to have a €1.5m option if they wish to fast-track the forward into their first-team squad this summer.

Despite Pep Guardiola stating earlier this year that Alvarez ‘will be with us’ in the summer for pre-season, there has been speculation to suggest that City may look to keep the forward in his homeland until 2023, as they eye a move for a big-money centre-forward such as Erling Braut Haaland.

A recent report from Argentina claimed the talismanic River forward would be leaving the club in the summer to join up with his new teammates ahead of schedule.

As per the latest information from River Plate president, Jorge Brito via Radio10, Alvarez is ‘very likely’ to join up with the Manchester City first-team squad in June as Pep Guardiola wants the attacker at his disposal in pre-season.

“Because of comments that we have already heard from Guardiola himself and those that they make to us, we always have to analyse the worst scenario from the sporting point of view and that is that he leaves in July,” Brito was quoted as saying by TyC Sports.

“Formally they will inform us about the date, but from the gesture and the conversation, everything indicates that Julián is going to leave in the middle of the year.”

However, the South American side’s chief further stressed that River Plate will make every effort to retain the Argentina international until December 2022.

“We are going to give the battle until the last minute, but you cannot go against what was agreed and the player’s career,” he explained.

Álvarez has five goals and two assists from 11 matches for River Plate in 2022. Last year, he managed 24 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.

The report was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
