Pep Guardiola has claimed Harry Kane ‘never was an option’ for Manchester City to sign in last summer’s transfer window after seeing his side fall to a late 3-2 defeat to Tottenham.
Kane starred for Spurs during a hectic fixture at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday evening, which saw the visitors escape with three points deep into second half stoppage-time.
After taking 43 points from the previous 45 on offer, it was perhaps inevitable that City’s standards would dip at some point,
Kane brilliantly created the first Spurs goal, finished the second, was denied another goal by a tight VAR decision against provider Dejan Kulusevski and then popped up with the late, late winner.
The fine display from the forward comes after City made a bid for him last summer but Spurs stood firm and held onto their prize asset.
As we approach a new summer in a few more months and with City still in the market for a striker, rumours around the England captain’s future is showing no sign of going away.
But Guardiola said after Saturday’s game that Kane was never truly a possibility for City, thus bringing an end to talk from goings-on ahead of the season.
‘Never was an option everybody knows we were interested, but never was an option so we forget, it’s the past,’ Guardiola told a press conference.
‘It’s not necessary to show today the goals he scored and the quality with the ball to show his quality, all the UK knows it.’
There Guardiola’s comments on Harry Kane was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
