Premier League clubs, managers and captains have been discussing the continuation of the season in light of the Omicron variant’s spread throughout the United Kingdom.
Over the past couple of weeks, teams have seen their schedules changed and games cancelled at the last minute due to multiple players returning positive COVID-19 tests, sometimes on the day of the fixture.
Several clubs have gone to the Premier League, begging bowl in hand, requesting last-minute postponements due to positive cases within their squads.
So far, there has been no framework published by the League which stipulates how many members of the playing squad and staff are required to have tested positive for a postponement to be considered.
A report in The Athletic revealed late on Sunday evening that clubs would discuss the possibility of a circuit-breaker to the Christmas schedule, relating to games due to be played between 27 and 29 December.
As things stand, that game will go ahead as planned, as per The Athletic.
At this afternoon’s meeting, the Premier League and its members have decided to carry on with the festive fixture list despite the inevitable threat of postponements over the coming weeks.
It is expected the Premier League will continue to judge postponement criteria on a case-by-case basis.
The news was shared on Twitter by City Xtra and it attracted plenty of attention from the club’s supporters.
