Borussia Monchengladbach has confirmed that midfielder Denis Zakaria plans to leave the club when his contract expires in the summer.
The 25-year-old has already been linked with a move to Manchester City multiple times this season, with Pep Guardiola potentially identifying him as a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.
The Switzerland international entered the final year of his contract with Gladbach in the summer. Since then, speculations over his future flying around with Barcelona among the clubs that have been linked with a Bosman move for the midfielder.
Now, Gladbach have officially confirmed that Zakaria will be leaving at the end of the season. “I already contacted his agent before Christmas and said that we would be planning without him from the summer at the latest,” said director Max Eberl.
With the official confirmation arriving, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that Barça have already gotten in touch with Zakaria’s agent.
The Italian journalist has claimed that apart from the Catalans, the likes of Juventus, Bayern Munich are also in contact with the midfielder’s representatives along with a couple of unnamed clubs from the Premier League.
Whether the Citizens will come forward in January to offer him a contract as he enters the final six months of his deal remains to be seen.
Despite having both Rodri and Fernandinho at his disposal, with the latter set to turn 37-years-old next summer, Pep Guardiola would do well to bring in the Brazilian’s long-term successor.

We should definitely go for this, with Fernandinho leaving at the end of the season we need a back up for Rodri, we can put all of our money on a striker and get him for free.
