Manchester City could be set to miss out on Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, as he better suited to playing for Manchester United, it has been claimed.
Having missed out on a deal for Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane earlier this year, the Citizens are expected to spend big on a new centre-forward ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.
The Borussia Dortmund’s striker is reportedly next Pep Guardiola’s ‘primary striker target’ as he looks for a new No 9 after the departure of Sergio Aguero last summer.
The Norwegian has become one of the most sought-after players in the transfer market since making his breakthrough at Red Bull Salzburg a couple of years ago.
Haaland, who remains under contract with the Black and Yellow until 2024, has already netted 19 goals in 16 appearances for Dortmund this term despite injury concerns.
Such remarkable progress in Germany has invariably put the Norwegian goal machine on the radars of many European football clubs, who are bracing themselves for a battle to attract the services of the Dortmund talisman with a saga brewing ahead of the summer transfer window.
Manchester City are reportedly the favorite Premier League club to sign Haaland. The forward’s agent Mino Raiola earlier this month named Man City, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich as potential suitors for the striker.
However, Pep Guardiola’s side could be set to miss out on Borussia Dortmund striker as he would be better suited to playing for Manchester United rather than City, it has been claimed.
Journalist Christian Falk claims the player would “fit perfectly” at United, while City boss Pep Guardiola would probably prefer to sign a forward who suits his system slightly better than Haaland would.
He told BILD : “You have to say that Manchester United are following developments themselves, including the topic of Haaland.
“I’ve been talking about City for a while now, and of course, Haaland’s name is always on the agenda.
“You have to be honest, though, with Pep Guardiola and Haaland, I don’t think he really wants this striker if he can get another one because the system of play is designed differently.
“At United, Haaland fits like a glove, as our experts have said. Everything fits United perfectly.”
