Michael Ball believes Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers would be the ideal successor for Pep Guardiola if he opts not to renew his contract in 2023.
The former Barcelona boss has suggested that he could depart the Etihad Stadium at the end of the 2022/23 season, and could potentially move on to manage an international team.
Guardiola has enjoyed a phenomenal run as the club’s manager, winning three Premier League titles, four EFL Cups, and the FA Cup, while he is also a Champions League runner-up after reaching the final against Chelsea last season.
Meanwhile Rodgers, of course, has enjoyed a good run at Leicester, too, and won the FA Cup last season, while also guiding the club to a fifth-placed finish.
Ball thinks that the former Liverpool boss Rodgers would be the perfect replacement for Guardiola, although he maintains that City will have an extensive shortlist.
He said: “I can understand Brendan Rodgers, with what he’s done throughout his career. He’s always a manager who’s got his principles and his style of play probably suits Man City.
“Doing the work I do and speaking to many scouts and technical directors around the world, Manchester City seem to be the only club I know who have scouts monitoring managers and coaches on the sidelines at every age level.”
Though Rodgers might be a suitable alternative if Guardiola were to depart, City fans will undoubtedly hope that their brilliant manager extends his term in Manchester as he has brought a degree of success otherwise unknown to City supporters.
