Pep Guardiola failed to win a third UEFA Champions League title, the first since he left Barcelona in 2012.
Manchester City arrived to the UEFA Champions League final as favorites to take the trophy home, but now they will have to make that trip back to the Etihad empty-handed.
The team led by Pep Guardiola had made the trip to their first UCL final adding records to the team’s history, but there was one for the continental competition they were not able to overcome.
Since 1997, there have been nine debutant teams in the tournament’s final. Out of those, only one has been able to lift the title (Borussia Dortmund). Since then, no debutant team has been able to win the title in their first appearance in the UCL Final.
The list includes some top-caliber names such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and even PSG under Thomas Tuchel last year.
Here’s the full list of debutant teams that have lost a title clash since 1997.
“The hoodoo for debutant teams in a UCL final continues.
Borussia Dortmund remain the only debutant club in the Champions League era (1992-93) to win the cup”.
