Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has defended Benjamin Mendy after the full back breached COVID protocols on New Year’s Eve, telling the Frenchman’s critics to look themselves in the mirror.
Three days after City’s coronavirus outbreak forced the postponement of a match, defender Mendy held a New Year’s Eve party in breach of England’s pandemic restrictions. The Sun even even went ahead to claim the Frenchman called an agency to hire him “big bum Latina” girls to come over.
The Frenchman is known for being a bit of a character, but he’s fast becoming a bit of an embarrassment to City for his off-the-field antics.
Many fans must have thought the news will infuriate Pep Guardiola who earlier this week revealed that his players are given daily reminders to strictly observe the guideline in place.
But when asked about Mendy in the post-match press conference after Sunday’s 3-1 win over Chelsea, Guardiola added: “He broke the rules, I’m not justifying it, he cannot do it. But don’t give lessons to the other ones, don’t put examples from the players for society. We all have to do what we have to do.
“Of course it was not correct what he has done, but don’t judge him too much, if we look at what we have done New Year’s Eve, many, many people have maybe done the same.
“It’s easy to judge others. If everyone put the demanding intentions on ourselves everyone would be better.”
In reaction to Pep Guardiola’s comment shared on twitter by Man City Xtra, many Man City fans have been sharing their thoughts and opinions.

Yes but in the Amazon documentary Pep said he’ll never talk bad about his players to the media. Mendy is toast and we all know it.
