Manchester City are considering an offer to prise Lionel Messi from Barcelona in January with the Catalan giants resigned to losing him at the end of this season, according to reports.
City were reportedly in talks to sign Messi this summer with the Argentine star pushing for a move away from Barcelona.
However, the six-times world player of the year eventually decided to stay in Spain for the coming season, the last on his current deal, as he did not want to face a legal battle with the club he joined as a teenager and with whom he has amassed more than 30 major trophies.
According to The Daily, Manchester City will offer Barca a fee of £15m in the hopes of tempting them into selling in January rather than trying to negotiate a potential free transfer next summer.
A separate report from The Mirror have now claimed, however, that the Nou Camp outfit are braced to finally let their icon leave at the end of this season.
Premier League giants are still favourites to sign wantaway superstar in sensational deal and reunite him with Pep Guardiola.
Omar Berrada, City’s chief football operations manager, recently confirmed the club would reignite their interest in the six-time Ballon d’Or winner next summer.
He told the Manchester Evening News: ‘He’s the best player in the world, he’s the best player of his generation. I think any club in the world would like to explore the possibility of him joining their team.
Messi will be able to start thrashing out deals with other clubs from January, with his contract set to run down at the end of the campaign.
