Fernandinho has been confirmed as Manchester City’s new club captain by manager Pep Guardiola.
The Brazil international, who was handed a one-year contract extension after impressing as a stand-in centre back last season, takes over from David Silva, who left the club this summer after 10 years at the club and who himself took over Vincent Kompany the season before.
City boss Pep Guardiola explained: “He will be good, as he always has done since I met him.
“Sometimes I have captains, it doesn’t matter with the armband, being the first captain, he is always a guy who leads in the bad moments.
“We decided in the locker room – the players, the backroom staff – we decided that Fernandinho is captain and I am more than delighted with that.”
Fernandinho, who joined the club from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013, was picked out by his teammates after last season being one of the “assistant” captains, along with Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne.
In reaction to the news shared on Twitter by City Chief and Man City Xtra, City fans have expressed their thoughts and opinions.

We need a captain who will be the captain for the next 5 years. That’s kdb. Not another who will be gone in a year. De bruyne is clearly ready to take the armband. Shit decision— Harry Fleming (@mcfc_hf) September 20, 2020
Captain is more than a player on the pitch it’s a voice in the dressing room… anyone can be captain it’s just a responsibility to wear the arm band nothing else. It’s his last season and he deserves the armband— 𝘐𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘺𝘯 🏴 (@iestynmcfc) September 20, 2020
He’s 35 so he’s not going to play much as his legs have gone. Is this the best captain for us to have?— Liz Tray (@LizTray) September 20, 2020
We all know KDB is the leader in the team. They’re just paying tribute to fernandinho for being a great servant to the club.— Nilantik (@NiL_CITIZEN) September 20, 2020
Swansong captaincy, Tom. Same as what we did with David Silva last season.— Chris (@Quinny854) September 20, 2020
