Manchester City are looking to sign another centre-back this summer and Jose Giménez had emerged as an interesting alternative for Kalidou Koulibaly.
The Citizens have been trying to sign Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli for much of the transfer window. It’s been a hard fight, with the Serie A club’s president wanting a huge fee and being unrealistic regarding his prospects of getting it.
With less than two weeks of the transfer window to go, City are still working on adding to their two signings of Ferran Torres and Nathan Ake before the October 5 deadline.
Gimenez, 25, has been linked with a move to City and AS reported earlier this month that Atletico had turned down a big-money offer from the Premier League club.
La Liga club’s president Enrique Cerezo confirmed the La Liga giants had received an offer of £78 million (€85m/$99m) as quoted by goal from City, but wanted to keep the defender.
“We did receive the offer,” he told El Transistor.
“But Gimenez is a magnificent player and we are interested in having magnificent players in the team.”

City’s hope of signing the defender became even more complicated after the Uruguayan was tested positive for the coronavirus. He will not be able to complete a medical before the Oct. 5 deadline due to the fact he will be self-isolating.
According to The Daily Star, City have not given up hope and have requested that FIFA extends the transfer deadline for the deal so the medical can be completed safely.
The resolute centre-back has become one of Europe’s most highly-rated defenders in recent years after making 191 appearances in all competitions for Atletico Madrid in a seven year spell which has seen him win four major trophies.
