Manchester City Fans have been reacting to a post on Twitter, which relays a comment by former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand that the club will be consider Pep Guardiola a failure if he does not win the Champions League.
Pep Guardiola’s side face Lyon in the quarter-finals of this season’s mini-tournament, which is currently being contested in Lisbon.
Guardiola, 49, has won the Champions League in 2009 and 2011 while in charge at Barcelona. But he was not been able to repeat the feat in his three years at Bayern Munich 2013-2016, and so far not at City either where he has been since 2016.
It’s now nine years since he last lifted the trophy with Barcelona and there are many who insist that Guardiola can’t win it without the influence of Lionel Messi on the pitch.
Citics will always use the lack of European success as a stick to beat him with. The Catalan was brought in to deliver that trophy but so far, he’s proven unsuccessful.
Rio Ferdinand believes that if it’s not – and if they don’t win the Champions League under Guardiola at all – then his time at the club will be considered a failure.
“He has been brought in by their owners specifically to win the Champions League, whether he likes it or not,” Rio said.
“They were winning the Premier League before he arrived. So he hasn’t so far achieved anything at City that nobody else has.
“He can say what he wants about not being judged on the Champions League because he has to protect himself – but he has been brought in to win this tournament.
“I’m not saying he would be unsuccessful if he doesn’t manage to win it. But he would not have done what was on the tin.”
In reaction to Ferdinand’s opinion shared on Twitter by City Chief, City fans have expressed their thoughts and opinions.
