It has been reported by The Athletic that Kalvin Phillips is likely to leave Manchester City for good this summer, regardless of whether West Ham exercises their option to buy him or not.
According to Florian Plettenburg of Sky Sports, West Ham has the option to buy the England international for €40m (£35m) on a permanent basis. However, this is an option and not an obligation to buy. Therefore, West Ham can decide to send Phillips back to Manchester City if he does not live up to expectations.
The Athletic also reported that the £45m man is likely to find a new permanent home and leave the Etihad Stadium for good, regardless of what decision West Ham makes.
Phillips has played only 89 minutes of Premier League football for Manchester City this season before moving to West Ham on loan. Since his arrival from Leeds United in July 2022, he has only made two Premier League starts for Manchester City.
Sam Lee, Manchester City correspondent for The Athletic, also reported that Bernardo Silva could potentially depart if a club triggers his new release clause, and there are also considerations for a new winger at the Etihad Stadium.
There are also reports that Manchester City is poised to sign Savio ahead of Real Madrid due to the City Football Group connections involved.
In short, there are likely to be further developments in the coming months, although it is not expected that Manchester City will be busy up until the transfer deadline.
